Taichung Lantern Festival: Dual Lantern Displays Light Up Lantern Festival, Phoenix Blossoms Dazzle

The “2017 Central Taiwan Lantern Festival” was held from February 5 to February 19 at Taichung Park and the Port of Taichung Art Center. The annual Lantern Festival on the 15th day of the first lunar month marks the grand finale of the New Year celebrations, often referred to as the “Little New Year.” On this day, families celebrate joyously with fireworks, lanterns, and glutinous rice balls, creating an auspicious atmosphere of peace and happiness — hence the phrase “Lantern Festival revelry.”

This year, coinciding with the Year of the Rooster, the lantern theme features the phoenix, king of birds. Taichung Park showcases the male “phoenix,” highlighted in yellow tones to emphasize masculinity, while Qingshui represents the female “feng,” depicted in red and pink shades to reflect femininity and grace. The color schemes of the two main lanterns are similar to those of the mini lanterns. The “Phoenix Blossoms” main light show runs every night from 7 to 10 PM on the hour at both lantern zones. In addition to lighting effects, the show incorporates floral smoke to echo the ongoing flower expo — a truly unique touch. The event introduces multi-sensory experiences not seen in previous years, with interactive installations among the secondary lantern displays, local food offerings, and themed evening galas.
