The DiverCity Gundam in Odaiba bows out – the latest model continues its exhibition

DiverCity, a popular attraction in Tokyo's Odaiba area, officially bid farewell to its 1:1 scale RX-78-2 Gundam statue after five years of exhibition on March 5. A closing ceremony was also held, with fans expressing their reluctance as piano trio renditions of iconic Gundam theme songs played on site.

The Odaiba Gundam has become a pilgrimage site for Gundam fans and a popular destination for international tourists to see the full-scale robot. Although the RX-78-2 Gundam statue has ended its exhibition, the relevant authorities also announced that a similarly 1:1 scale, highly popular robot model — the Unicorn Gundam — will be displayed at the same location in autumn 2017, drawing cheers from the audience.

The successor, the Unicorn Gundam, is a character from the anime adaptation of author Harutoshi Fukui’s novel "Mobile Suit Gundam UC." Expected to stand around 21 meters tall, it will have an even more impressive presence, generating high anticipation among Gundam fans and tourists alike.
