Mayor Ko’s Southeast Asia visit has brought him to its second stop, Bangkok. In the morning, he visited the renowned Marble Temple in Thailand. The ashes of King Chulalongkorn, the fifth monarch of Thailand and regarded as a key figure in Thailand’s modernization, are enshrined beneath this temple. King Chulalongkorn is also the young emperor who was taught by Anna in the famous movie "Anna and the King," and the temple is featured on the back of Thailand’s 5-baht coin.

This morning, temple representatives specially presented a Buddha statue to Mayor Ko and gave a guided tour for the mayor and Taipei delegates. As the visit coincided with a prayer ceremony for the birthday of Thailand’s Princess Sirindhorn, Mayor Ko Wen-je said after touring the Marble Temple that what impressed him most was the statue of Sakyamuni Buddha who attained enlightenment under the tree. Though the figure appears emaciated, it was from such suffering that the true essence and tenets of Buddhism were born.

Mayor Ko said that Thailand is the "Land of a Thousand Buddhas." On this trip, he has visited two major Asian tourist cities, Kuala Lumpur and Bangkok, and he also welcomes Thai people to visit Taipei for a temple tour to experience its blend of retro and innovative culture. Throughout this journey, he has witnessed the multicultural aspects of tourism, reflected on Taiwan’s current challenges, and reaffirmed the importance of developing tourism. Southeast Asia is a significant economic bloc in the world and also the most crucial strategic hinterland for Taiwan’s economic and social development. He hopes that by improving visas and flight connections, the tourism "meridians" can be unblocked, making Taipei the top choice for Asian travel.

Kuala Lumpur is striving to become a gateway city for Muslims entering Asia. Thailand welcomes over 25 million tourists annually, promoting Thai cuisine, massages, and eco-tourism. Both Malaysia and Thailand leverage the ASEAN 10-member framework to facilitate faster and more convenient tourist visas—practices worth learning from for Taipei. During this trip, not only were hotel-and-flight package incentives proposed, but efforts are also being made to actively prepare Taipei’s tourism resources in conjunction with the Universiade. The Tourism and Travel Bureau has introduced twelve recommended tourist routes, such as offering VIP judges and guests: a tea culture experience, a classic Taipei landmarks tour, a journey through Taoyuan’s time tunnel, a retreat to the tranquil Hsinchu, a relaxation journey through puppetry, and a reverse-timeline exploration of Taipei. Additionally, Taipei offers highly attractive luxury shopping and duty-free deals. In the future, it is hoped that the central government will help increase the number of foreign tour guides to further bolster Taipei’s tourism appeal.
