Restaurant by Chef André Chiang Rises in Ranking on The World’s 50 Best Restaurants 2017 List

After the release of Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants, the World’s 50 Best Restaurants list has also been announced. New York’s Eleven Madison Park claimed the top spot on the 2017 “World’s 50 Best Restaurants” list, also winning the titles of “World’s Best Restaurant” and “Best Restaurant in North America.” The list of this year’s ranked restaurants was revealed at an awards ceremony held in Melbourne, featuring six newly listed restaurants. France, Spain, and the United States each had six restaurants on the list.

Among the seven Asian restaurants on the list, Japan and Thailand each have two. Bangkok’s Gaggan, ranked seventh, was named “Asia’s Best Restaurant.” Taiwan-born chef André Chiang’s Restaurant ANDRE in Singapore rose 18 places to rank 14th; Tokyo’s Den made its first appearance on the list, coming in at 45th.

Last year’s No. 1, Italy’s Osteria Francescana in Modena, came in second this year and was once again named “Europe’s Best Restaurant.” France had six restaurants on the list, three of which are in the top 20. Alléno Paris au Pavillon Ledoyen, led by chef Yannick Alléno, made its first appearance at No. 31 and won the “Highest New Entry Award,” sponsored by Aspire Lifestyles. Another Parisian restaurant, Septime (No. 35), received the “Sustainable Restaurant Award,” sponsored by Silestone.

Spain also had six restaurants on the list, three of which are in the top ten. El Celler de Can Roca, which previously held the top spot, came in third this year and was awarded the “Ferrari Trento Art of Hospitality Award.” Dan Barber’s restaurant Blue Hill at Stone Barns jumped 37 places to No. 11, earning the “Highest Climber Award,” sponsored by Lavazza.

New York-based pastry chef Dominique Ansel was honored with the 2017 “World’s Best Pastry Chef” award. Representing the host country Australia, Melbourne’s Attica (No. 32) was again named “Australia’s Best Restaurant.” Additionally, Brae, located in Victoria state where Melbourne is situated, made its first appearance on the list at No. 44 this year.

Chef Virgilio Martínez won two major awards. His restaurant Central in Peru (No. 5) was selected as “South America’s Best Restaurant,” and he also took home the “Chefs’ Choice Award,” sponsored by Estrella Damm. Renowned chef Heston Blumenthal was awarded the 2017 “Diners Club® Lifetime Achievement Award,” while his London restaurant Dinner by Heston Blumenthal rose nine places to No. 36. Ana Roš from Slovenia’s Hisa Franko restaurant was named “World’s Best Female Chef” for 2017.
