CNN's 2017 list of must-visit beautiful hidden gems — Thailand’s Isaan ancient ruins make the cut

With its rich natural environment, unique cultural charm, and distinctive food culture, Thailand attracts large numbers of backpackers every year. When it comes to traveling in Thailand, big cities like Bangkok, Chiang Mai, and Pattaya often come to mind. However, in CNN’s recent selection of the world’s top 17 must-visit destinations for 2017, Thailand’s northeastern Isaan region stood out as a beautiful city worth exploring in the eyes of travel experts.

The list of must-visit destinations for 2017 was selected by travel experts and international journalists from CNN. Yuthasak Supasorn, Governor of the Tourism Authority of Thailand, said: “Thailand’s northeastern Isaan has a long history, where some of the oldest human settlements in Southeast Asia have been discovered. Today, it is known for its spicy salads, folk music, breathtaking scenery, and exquisite temple architecture.” Isaan still has many hidden gems yet to be explored, and it also boasts excellent infrastructure, such as convenient domestic airports and hotels.

For example, the vibrant flowers of the red lotus sea in Khun Phawapi District, Udon Thani Province, typically bloom from New Year’s to February. Visitors can rent a boat to admire the red lotuses up close and enjoy the natural scenery of freshwater lakes and waterways. In addition, Thailand’s northeastern ancient history is also seen as a unique attraction. CNN recommends that visitors explore the ancient Khmer ruins in Buriram Province, which are over a thousand years old, and the Bronze Age artifacts at the Ban Chiang Archaeological Site, listed by UNESCO. Moreover, the mountains and hills of Loei Province are also recognized as beautiful destinations worth visiting.
