A 1,000-meter-high suspension bridge — Taiwan’s longest — offers sweeping views of vast sea of clouds and plains

Meishan Township in Chiayi, home to the country’s reputed single-span longest scenic suspension bridge — Taiping Sky Ladder, broke ground in 2014. After going through various phases, it is finally set to be completed and open to visitors this July. In recent years, attractions such as skywalks and sky ladders have become hugely popular, attracting many adventure-seeking and height-loving tourists. To compete with Pingtung’s Liuli Suspension Bridge, Chiayi’s Taiping Sky Ladder spans 281 meters and sits at an altitude of about 1,000 meters, crossing from Wangfeng Platform in Taiping Village, Meishan, to the Rainbow Waterfall in Sanyuan. Visitors here can overlook the Jianan Plain and the vast sea of clouds, and even catch glimpses of the Taiwan Strait, with valleys, waterfalls, and mountain scenery all within view.
