Travelers heading to Thailand for Songkran Festival, beware: Khao San Road cancels major celebrations

Thailand’s iconic Songkran Festival in April attracts countless tourists from around the globe each year. The annual event is scheduled for April 13 to 15. However, due to the national mourning period following the passing of King Bhumibol Adulyadej, Bangkok’s lively Khao San Road will not hold its usual large-scale celebrations.

Songkran marks the traditional Thai New Year. April 13 is Thai New Year’s Day, April 14 is National Family Day, and April 15 is National Respect for the Aged Day. It draws travelers from all over the world for festivities every year.

According to foreign media reports,This year, Khao San Road is expected to see an influx of over 100,000 tourists and locals. However, due to the national mourning period, the normally vibrant area around Bangkok’s Khao San Road will not host major events such as concerts or stage performances—but public water-splashing celebrations will still be allowed.
