Taitung was once Taiwan’s hinterland, but today it is the island’s backyard garden—where mountain ranges collide and blue seas meet azure skies. Home to over six indigenous tribes, this place boasts a rich natural environment, pristine springs, and a vibrant cultural scene, making these its greatest charm and characteristics. Below are ten must-photograph spots in Taitung, ranging from coastal landscapes to cultural art. Through the lens, what’s captured is not only beautiful mountains and waters, but also many worthwhile attractions.

1. Qialulan Recreation Area

Qialulan Recreation Area, derived from the Amis language, means “a place to wash one’s hair.” It earned this name because the nearby creek is rich in sticky minerals that naturally moisturize and shine hair after washing. It is also a new hub for handmade market art, featuring many highly photogenic installations.

2. Taimali Cherry Wood Level Crossing

One of the most popular photo spots in Taimali is the Cherry Wood Level Crossing, which went viral due to its resemblance to a scene from the opening theme of the anime “Slam Dunk,” and has since attracted numerous visitors looking to pay homage.

3. Bixiliyan Jimmy Liao Theme Park

Bixiliyan is a simple Amis tribal village that blends traditional culture with innovative art. In addition to showcasing tribal handicrafts and local agricultural specialties, in July 2013, the “Jimmy Liao” brand held simultaneous themed exhibitions in Taitung City and Bixiliyan. The brand also assisted the tribe in transformation and diverse development in branding, environmental spaces, tour experiences, meals, merchandise, and artistic creation.
