46,000 pineapples "collectively sunproofed" in spectacular display — Pingtung’s vibrant pineapple flower fields

Pingtung County’s Gaoshu Township is famous for its pineapple production, and recently, a colorful pineapple field has appeared along Section 3 of County Highway 185, becoming an eye-catching piece of land art. The Maolin National Scenic Area Administration got creative by using traditional pineapple sun-shading farming techniques to place multicolored sun hats on 46,000 pineapples, instantly transforming the once monotonous field into a colorful canvas on the land.

Everyone has eaten pineapples, but few have seen a pineapple field up close, let alone know that pineapples also need "sun protection." Between March and May each year when pineapples ripen, the climate is dry, rainy days are few, and sunlight is intense — pineapple fruits are prone to sunburn under strong sun exposure. To prevent this, farmers cover the fruits with caps. This time, the Maolin National Scenic Area Administration teamed up with Yinshe Farm to create a one-of-a-kind painted pineapple field, placing colorful caps on 46,000 pineapples, instantly forming a vibrant sea of blooming pineapple flowers. From above, you can also spot a big smiley face and a purple butterfly pattern, attracting many visitors to stop and take photos.

The painted pineapple field is located at Yinshe Farm in Gaoshu Township, now managed by the third generation. Hong Mingcong, who holds a master’s degree, returned to his hometown to grow pineapples and insists on using the most traditional farming methods. He has transformed the family-run pineapple farm that has been cultivated for three generations into a piece of land art — not only producing premium pineapples but also beautifying the environment and boosting tourism income. During the holiday period, it’s peak season for Golden Diamond pineapples. When visiting Pingtung, you can admire and enjoy sweet pineapples, as well as take beautiful photos in the painted pineapple field.
