Limited-time hot air balloon light show at Taipei Liberty Square tonight only

The most anticipated summer event of the year — the Taiwan International Hot Air Balloon Festival — will kick off in Taitung on June 30. Following the huge success of last year’s hot air balloon light music concert, which made its debut in Kaohsiung, Taitung County Government announced it will hold a one-day flash event, the Taipei Hot Air Balloon Light Music Concert, at Taipei Liberty Square — National Theater & Concert Hall Plaza on Saturday, June 3, allowing Taipei visitors to enjoy the spectacle early.

In addition to showcasing a variety of hot air balloons and offering tethered rides and flights, the light music concert is one of the highlights of the Taiwan International Hot Air Balloon Festival. The hot air balloon light show, created using the flames from the balloons, has traditionally been unique to Taitung. Due to its great success in Kaohsiung last year, the festival has decided to bring eight hot air balloons to Taipei Liberty Square on June 3 for a one-night-only light music concert, inviting Taipei visitors to dance under the glowing balloons.

Since 2015, the hot air balloon light music concerts have evolved from weekly shows to touring performances — each presenting a major challenge. This year’s first edition moves to Taipei Liberty Square, while Taitung will also bring hot air balloons to various towns for shared celebration. Last year, Typhoon Nepartak prevented the show at Sanxiantai; this year, they aim to light up the coast of Chenggong Township’s Sanxiantai, using the backdrop of the eight-arched coastal bridge to present the most stunning dawn light show. The final show will return to the birthplace of hot air ballooning — Luye Gaotai — for the closing light music concert themed “Let’s Go Home,” recreating the original magic of stars, moon, and dazzling fireworks as backdrops.
