Stepping into a fairytale world of Moomin, the “Moomin Café,” beloved by Japanese girls, grandly opened in Taiwan on July 7th. At the café, not only can you enjoy special dishes themed around the cute characters, but what’s even more special is that you can dine and sip coffee alongside the Moomin family, sharing warm and joyful moments. The “Moomin Café” is a restaurant themed around the fairy tale “Moomin” created by Finnish author Tove Jansson. In Taiwan, the Moomin cartoons are widely known, depicting the adventures and stories of the Moomin elf family living in Moomin Valley in the Finnish forests, in their carefree lives. Within the stories and world depicted by Finnish author Tove Jansson, you can not only feel the deeper meanings behind the tales but also appreciate the highly original and exquisite original artwork. The characters she drew are full of fun, warmth, and emotion—such as the philosophical quotes from Moomin’s mother—which bring rich experiences to readers and viewers.

The interior design of the “Moomin Café” is based on scenes from the original story, paired with the textured design of Moomin’s homeland, “Finland.” The spacious and comfortable space, along with its leisurely atmosphere, makes you feel as if you’ve stepped into the fairytale world of Moomin as soon as you enter. Both the dishes and tableware incorporate the adorable characters from the Moomin family, combining various elements loved by women, with thoughtful details that offer delightful surprises everywhere.

Since opening on May 1, 2003, in Tokyo, “Moomin Café” has sparked widespread discussion and gained immense popularity in Japan, especially among women aged 20 to 40. Many Taiwanese travelers have also visited Japan specifically for it. In addition to the interior design and special dishes, the Moomin merchandise fully utilizes this unique charm and is highly design-oriented. As a result, in Japan, not only the Moomin characters but the brand itself are widely loved by women—even over ten years after opening, there are still lines of people waiting.
