Pink blooms of Bauhinia blakeana create a dreamy sea of flowers at Tainan Park

The Bauhinia blakeana trees in Tainan Park are in full bloom, showcasing a vast expanse of pink flowers that have attracted many passersby to take photos. Numerous local residents strolling by also pause to admire the beautiful sight of the pink Bauhinia blakeana blossoms.

Located near Tainan Railway Station, Tainan Park is home to hundreds of Bauhinia blakeana trees. Every March, they burst into a sea of pink blooms. Passengers alighting from buses are greeted by this beautiful pink floral display, as if the city itself, acting like a warm ambassador, passionately welcomes visitors — a truly romantic and charming scene.

Bauhinia blakeana is also known as the Hong Kong orchid tree. In China, it's called the “yang zi zhi” or “foreign kapok.” It typically blooms from March to May. Many people mistake it for the Bauhinia x blakeana or even the azalea. From a distance, its blossoms resemble both cherry blossoms and azaleas. The Bauhinia blakeana flower has five pink petals, one of which features deep red stripes, making it particularly distinctive.

Creating such a vast sea of pink flowers wasn’t easy. In the past, the soil here was compacted, leading to the gradual withering and death of the Bauhinia blakeana trees. Over three years ago, a revitalization effort began: the soil was improved, new saplings were cultivated, and trees were replanted — resulting in the magnificent pink floral sea we see today.
