▲Lai Ancestral Tofu Pudding has been open for over 60 years.

“Lai Ancestral Tofu Pudding” has been in business for over 60 years. The shop emphasizes using non-GMO, carefully selected soybeans to make tofu pudding, with three options available: traditional tofu pudding, black soybean pudding, and pudding-style tofu pudding. Only the traditional type is available hot. Among them, the unique flavor of the black bean pudding is a popular item in the store. The tofu pudding has a soft, silky texture with rich aroma and a refreshing broth that isn’t overly sweet.

The toppings are also a major highlight of the shop. Taro balls and crispy pearls are recommended by netizens as must-orders. Unlike the usual round ones sold in markets, the taro balls and crispy pearls at “Lai Ancestral Tofu Pudding” are large, square-shaped, chewy and bouncy, adding fun to the chewing experience. The beans are cooked soft but not mushy, melting in your mouth, and the overall combination leaves a lasting impression. Even though there are no seats in the shop and it’s only for takeout, it still attracts large crowds who come from afar just for this taste.

The ordering process also follows a standard SOP set by the shop. First, you need to decide on the portion size: small bowl for NT$35, large bowl for NT$45, family size for NT$135. For cold orders, you can choose to add ice or go without; for hot orders, you can opt for ginger juice or caramel. Next, you can select three toppings from Q balls, taro balls, crispy pearls, peanuts, red beans, green beans, soybeans, and small Job’s tears. Finally, choose between traditional tofu pudding, black soybean pudding, or pudding-style tofu pudding.
