Many parents take advantage of the summer vacation to plan a family trip and enjoy happy summer moments together. According to Expedia’s “Family Travel Attitude Survey” targeting teenagers and parents in Taiwan, Hong Kong, Japan, and South Korea, results showed that over 90% of teenagers want to travel with their families to strengthen bonds, but 40% of parents in Taiwan and Hong Kong are reluctant to take their children on summer trips due to concerns about schoolwork.

However, aside from concerns about children falling behind in their studies, another reason parents in Taiwan and Hong Kong are hesitant to travel during the summer is that they find it hard to fully enjoy a holiday with kids. Therefore, family travel expert DaKou shares 5 essential tips for family travel, making tasks such as booking flights, hotels, and arranging itineraries much less troublesome.
Tokyo Disneyland is a popular destination for many families during summer vacations
First, check the weather and temperature of your destination. If you’re heading to a colder place, it’s recommended to pack one or two extra sets of clothing, and don’t forget cold-weather essentials. Try to keep mom’s purse light and handy, and you may also bring some small snacks in case the kids get hungry while playing outside.
If the flight duration is long, it’s recommended to choose a traditional airline and prioritize those that are more family-friendly. Also, flight timing is an important consideration—avoid booking red-eye or extremely early flights, and try to align with the kids’ nap times to ensure a quiet and pleasant flying experience.
When making a reservation, be aware of the hotel’s booking policies—some room types allow 1–2 extra children, while others do not. Additionally, the type of bed is also crucial. For younger children, it’s generally better to book a larger bed. DaKou also recommends choosing a hotel that includes breakfast so the whole family can eat well before starting the day.
