Located near Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall, Ebisu Curry Curry & Coffee serves budget-friendly and simple curry rice, with its dry curry being especially popular. That day, I gathered with friends here to enjoy dry curry, cheese dry curry, and oxtail curry, spending a simple yet heartwarming morning.

In the days just before summer, the weather is always unpredictable. Just a few days ago, we were experiencing a cold and damp spell, but on this day, the sun suddenly came out in full force, making both my friends and me break into a sweat. Ebisu Curry Curry & Coffee is located on Ningbo West Street, about a five-minute walk from Nanmen Market, with its deep blue signboard quite eye-catching.

The storefront has the simple charm of a small Japanese shop, and the wooden sliding doors are quite cute – though do remember to close them properly when entering or exiting.

There’s a small rule during peak hours: you can only be seated once your entire party has arrived. The space at Ebisu Curry is not large, with only about 15 seats, so I think this little rule makes sense. The staff are also very friendly.

The temperature that morning was really hot, and the sun made us all thirsty, so we immediately ordered an iced coffee for NT$70. Its tangy, aromatic flavor instantly cooled us down. I liked its slightly sour taste – smooth and refreshing.

Cheese Dry Curry NT$130, Dry Curry NT$120
Dry curry is the most popular dish at Ebisu, so we ordered two portions – one with cheese and one without. This dry curry reminded me of the curry my grandmother used to make when I was a child. Though it leans toward a Taiwanese-style flavor, it bore some resemblance to my grandmother’s curry, which made it feel familiar.
The texture is rich and pairs well with rice, but the pork flavor in the curry is quite strong, which can get a bit heavy after a while. Also, the white rice served that day felt somewhat soft to me, making the overall texture overly mushy.

Personally, I preferred the dry curry with cheese – the combination of cheese and curry helped slightly mask the greasiness, and the accompanying shredded daikon radish was also a nice touch.
Oxtail Curry NT$135
Besides dry curry, you can also opt for regular curry rice. While it’s not as thick as the dry version, the aroma is still good, and there’s a hint of sweetness from the vegetables. The oxtail was cooked to a nice tender bite, and it paired well with carrots and rice. However, the white rice in this dish also had the same overly soft issue, which was a bit of a shame.
