Taichung Waterfront Flower Capital’s New Highlight: The Revival of the Centuries-Old Huludun Canal

Aside from the recently popular new attraction Liuchuan Riverside and the emerging new landscapes in Taichung’s 13th Redevelopment Zone, the Huludun Canal in Fengyuan District has finally broken ground on the 27th, uncovering an irrigation channel with a history of over a hundred years, spanning a total length of 1.2 kilometers,will create a waterfront flower capital landscape, providing a new greenbelt park and recreational space. It will also revive the former glory of this “Mother River of Fengyuan” and, in conjunction with the 2018 Taichung Flower Expo, attract numerous domestic and international tourists.

The Fengyuan Huludun Canal is one of the oldest irrigation channels in central Taiwan and a vital water source for the Fengyuan area. Located near the city center’s Fengyuan Elementary School and train station, the river was covered over in the past to meet local development and parking needs. After being enclosed in concrete for more than 30 years, the Taichung Mayor decided to uncover the canal and develop a waterfront landscape and leisure space, reviving its century-old charm.

The Huludun Canal Uncovering and Landscape Environment Development Project has been listed as one of the major constructions for establishing Fengyuan as a sub-city center. After lengthy discussions and bottom-up consensus-building, the first phase of the project prioritizes the section from Section 1 to Section 3 of Sanfeng Road, in front of Fengyuan Elementary School, spanning approximately 300 meters.
