Hidden in an alleyway of residential homes in Tainan, there’s an ice shop that offers an incredibly cooling treat. Their signature dish is a milk shaved ice made with cherry tomatoes and preserves. The juicy cherry tomatoes paired with sweet-and-sour preserves make it irresistible to keep eating bite after bite—it’s truly a summer essential for beating the heat!

“Bing Zai Jiao,” which opened in 2008, is tucked away in a narrow residential alley. The cramped lane and unassuming storefront might make it hard for first-time visitors to find. There’s no prominent sign—just a small ordering window and a few tables. When it gets busy, it’s quite the sight to see everyone enjoying their ice on the roadside or even straight from their motorcycles. Bing Zai Jiao only offers five fruit-flavored milk shaved ice flavors, one ice cream shaved ice flavor, six fruit-flavored slushies, and customers order from the staff and wait for their number to be called before picking up their order at the window.

The tomato preserves milk shaved ice is the popular signature item at Bing Zai Jiao. It transforms the childhood favorite tomato preserves tanghulu into a refreshing shaved ice. The juicy cherry tomatoes are paired with dark plum preserves, then drizzled with lightly milky milk. The first bite delivers a delightful mix of sweet, sour, and cool flavors that will make you exclaim in delight—it also brings back fond memories of childhood when you couldn’t stop eating tanghulu despite your mouth being sticky.
