New Macau Entry Regulations: Declare Cash Over MOP 120,000

Travelers to Macau should take note. The Macau Tourism Board has issued a reminder that starting from November 1, 2017, in accordance with the "Regulations on the Control of Carrying Cash and Bearer Negotiable Instruments In and Out of the Territory," any person entering Macau with cash or bearer negotiable instruments such as checks exceeding MOP 120,000 (approximately TWD 450,000) must declare them to customs. Failure to do so may result in a fine ranging from MOP 1,000 to MOP 500,000.

The declaration requirement does not include gold or other precious metals and gemstones. Transit passengers making a short stop in the Macau SAR are also not required to make a declaration. The implementation of the declaration system will not restrict, hinder, or prohibit the legal flow of funds into or out of Macau.

After the law takes effect, travelers entering or leaving only need to follow the relevant regulations to make a declaration. In response to the new measures, Customs will roll out a series of promotional and publicity activities to ensure that travelers and residents are fully informed and to guarantee the effective enforcement of the law.
