Top Instagrammable Food Spots in Kaohsiung: Simple Yet Delicious Hainanese Chicken Rice

Because we had tickets to a Mayday concert, we planned a three-day trip to Kaohsiung. We stayed at two hotels we’d been interested in for a while and visited several popular food spots trending on Instagram under #KaohsiungFood — one of them being this place called ‘Nan Fan’ (male rice)! XD

I remember scrolling through Instagram and noticing that around the same time, two new shops had popped up in Kaohsiung: one called Nan Fan (male rice) and another called Nü Zi Jiao Zi (female dumplings)! It sounded so fun that I just had to check them out. Our two-night, three-day itinerary was relaxed — we headed south to Chiayi first to try some delicious beef noodles, then made our way to Kaohsiung for a stroll.

On the last day, on our way back north to Taichung, we stopped by Tainan to check out two newly opened, popular spots: kokoni kakigori and Fei Shi Lou. I think travel should be just like this — spontaneous and carefree.

On the first night, we managed to visit two places we’d been wanting to check out, and their locations were amazing — just about a ten-minute walk from Hotel Dua. After eating at ‘Nan Fan,’ we headed to “Nanhai Barber Shop” for some dessert ice cream on the way back. It all fell together so perfectly without any detours — I felt like this was the kind of good luck that lets you eat and explore to your heart’s content XD

We also really enjoy walking and strolling through unfamiliar cities — whether it’s during the day or in the evening, in different kinds of weather, at different paces, having different conversations. It always helps slow down the pace of the trip and creates more memorable moments.

On the slow walk to ‘Nan Fan,’ passing by convenience stores, seeing the sights along the way — all things you’d miss if you were driving. When we saw crowds gathering and the soft glow of lights, we knew we’d found the place we were looking for. We picked up the menu and started thinking about what to order while waiting for a table~

By the time we arrived, there were only a few servings of Hainanese chicken rice left, but luckily we got the last bowls of it. A taste of ‘Nan Fan’s’ classic dish right there.

This bowl of “Hainanese Chicken Rice” may look simple, but it offers a rustic, satisfying texture that’s incredibly comforting. ^______________^ / Perhaps deep down, what we love most are those unpretentious, everyday foods. They often carry genuine emotion and a sense of exclusivity with limited portions.

On top of the turmeric rice sits a half-moon portion of poached chicken, a few vibrant green broccoli florets, a half-boiled egg, and some house-made pickled vegetables. With a pair of chopsticks and a spoon in hand, you’ll suddenly realize how hungry you are. The tender chicken is even more appetizing thanks to the special chili sauce, and the turmeric rice has a chewy, delicate texture that’s simply captivating.

I’ve only recently realized I have this habit — no matter what I’m eating, I always like to “order a bowl of soup.” I’m not even sure why, but a friend pointed it out to me, and I realized I really do have this “habit”! XD This bowl of ‘Garlic Clam Soup’ has a homely taste. The broth is made with chicken stock. The rich aroma of garlic and the freshness of the clams warm both your mouth and your heart. ^___________^ /

I originally wanted to try the Thai basil pork, but they were sold out — only Hainanese chicken and green curry were left. But honestly, this green curry chicken rice ended up surprising me even more than the Hainanese chicken would have. This dish has a slight kick of spice, and the rich, flavorful curry sauce seeps into the turmeric rice. So every bite of rice carries the taste of the green curry, making it so addictive I wanted to order extra rice. XD

The tender chicken is very filling, but for guys, it might only be about 70–80% of a full meal. For girls, it’s probably just right.

After visiting the “Nan” (male) spot, the next stops — “Nan Hai” (south sea) and “Nü Zi” (female) — will have to wait for another share.
