Taiwanese cuisine has received acclaim from international media. According to CNN, which featured 40 must-try Taiwanese dishes, braised pork rice was ranked No. 1 several times. The rich, aromatic sauce drizzled over bouncy, soft rice has garnered high praise even from foreign visitors. This humble dish originated during Taiwan’s early days of economic hardship, when most people could only enjoy meat during festivals or ancestral worship ceremonies. On ordinary days, thrifty locals would ask pork vendors for leftover scraps like chopped meat and pig skin. They would dice these finely at home, stir-fry them with scallions, garlic, and spices, then braise the mixture in soy sauce to create a delicious rice topping. This deeply local flavor gradually won the hearts of Taiwanese people.

The Ministry of Economic Affairs’ Department of Commerce called on braised pork rice vendors across Taiwan to participate in the “2017 Taiwan Braised Pork Rice Festival.” After selecting 50–100 representative shops and undergoing a two-month process of preliminary selection, on-site evaluations, and final judging, 78 must-try braised pork rice shops nationwide were chosen this year. These include internationally recognized, hotel-grade, longest-waiting-line, and century-old aroma establishments. Through a series of follow-up promotional events, the goal is to make this classic Taiwanese dish famous worldwide and allow global travelers to fall in love with this intensely Taiwanese-flavored cuisine—braised pork rice.
