In the past, many people’s impression of Kinmen, an outlying island, was nothing more than sorghum, candied floss, and a strong military vibe. Aside from the wartime military relics left behind, Kinmen actually hides many lesser-known exotic buildings. Below are five selected Western-style mansion heritage sites in Kinmen. 1. De Yue Lou Exhibition Hall

The Western-style building was constructed in 1931 by Huang Huihuang, a wealthy businessman who had returned from Indonesia, who invested over 12,000 silver dollars in its construction. Later, due to rampant piracy, a defensive watchtower called “De Yue Lou” was added for safety. De Yue Lou was the tallest building in Kinmen at the time, making it particularly eye-catching in the settlement. Standing over 11 meters tall with 40-centimeter-thick walls, the fortification features exquisite carvings and elegant lines.

2. Chen Qingji Western-style Mansion

Located in Bishan, Jinsha Township, the Chen Qingji Western-style Mansion was built in 1930. This area sees relatively few visitors today but was once quite bustling and therefore saw the construction of several Western-style houses, among which the Chen Qingji Mansion stands out as the most grandiose. It was built by Chen Qingji, who had gone to Singapore to engage in business. The structure is imposing, with powerful lines, and it also served as a filming location for the movie “Paradise in Service.”
