The Taiwanese film 'The Great Buddha+', which returned triumphant from the Toronto International Film Festival, has also received much attention at the Busan Film Festival. Aside from the use of Taiwanese Hokkien, which distinguishes it from most Chinese-language films and introduces global filmmakers to a different side of Taiwan, the film’s unique visual style—director Ah Yao, favored by director Chung Mong-hong, employed an original camera perspective that revealed a different view of Taiwan’s landscapes and the realities of life through the eyes of the protagonists, Chen Yi-zeng and Chen Zhu-sheng. These moving scenes have also become recent IG-sharing highlights, turning into alternative popular spots searched and tagged by netizens.

1. Wu Jinsheng Buddhist Art Museum, Daliao, Kaohsiung
The factory where the giant Buddha was made serves as a main location in the film, including the factory where key events take place and the security guard room where the two protagonists, Cai Pi and Du Cai, bicker. Leveraging the existing Buddha statues at the Wu Jinsheng Buddhist Art Museum along with a constructed security room, the entire space presents a collage-style Taiwanese factory vibe.
2. Fengshan Gymnasium, Kaohsiung
The unique window grid design of Fengshan Gymnasium adds even more style to the black-and-white cinematography. The final Buddhist ceremony scene takes place here, complementing the solemn and suspenseful atmosphere.

3. Qigu Health Center, Tainan
Established in 1949, the center was set up due to insufficient medical facilities and the difficult lives of villagers that led to delayed medical treatment, creating a publicly funded healthcare facility. The long, single-story building with simple iron beds and ceiling fans preserves the ambiance of a rural health clinic. The protagonist Cai Pi’s mother suffers from long-term illness but lacks the means to seek better medical care. This scene portrays the helplessness and desolation of the poor in their daily lives. The crew began filming here, capturing the scenery of central and southern Taiwan along with the stories of lower and middle-class citizens.

4. Old Masago Fishing Port, Tainan
Located at the Jiujiang Interchange on the West Coast Expressway, this was once a thriving fishing port on Taiwan’s west coast. In recent years, environmental changes have led to declining catches and fewer fishing boats. However, the local fishing community and surrounding scenery can still be seen. The crew transformed a warehouse used by residents into the home of the male protagonist Du Cai, who works in recycling. The dilapidated residence and the desolate harbor underscore the hardships of Du Cai, a middle-aged man.

5. Qigu FishXm, Tainan
The Qigu area features mostly tidal flats, sandbars, lagoons, and scattered salt fields, creating a unique landscape. The film uses long shots to capture the Xisomi band performing amid these elements, delivering a vast and majestic visual feel.
