Old Meisha Troughs Turn Green: A Springtime Limited Spectacle to See Early

The unique natural wonder of Old Meisha Green Troughs in Shimen District on Taiwan’s northern coast typically displays a vast expanse of green algae scenery from April to May each year. However, due to climate warming, most of the troughs have turned green earlier than usual, attracting numerous tourists and photography enthusiasts to capture the scene.

In recent years, influenced by global warming and consecutive rainfall, the humid environment has been favorable for seaweed growth. The Old Meisha Troughs turned green as early as the end of December. Many visitors even noticed this phenomenon while watching the sunrise, turning it into an unexpected scenic beauty. Due to the early greening, it is estimated that the troughs will be fully green by late February to March, though they may also whiten earlier due to climatic factors.

Old Meisha Green Troughs
Public Transport: Take the Taipei-Keelung or Keelung-Taipei intercity bus operated by Danhai MRT Station or near Keelung Railway Station, and get off at “Laomei” Station (walk straight through the Laomei community upon disembarking to reach the site).
Car/Motorcycle Access:
1. Highway No. 3 (Jinshui Interchange) → Provincial Highway No. 2 → Wanli → Jinshan → Shimen (at 26.3 km mark on Provincial Highway No. 2)
2. Highway No. 1 (Wugu Interchange) → Freeway No. 64 → Bali-Wugu (heading towards Tamsui) → Guandu Bridge → Zhubei → Hongshulin → Provincial Highway No. 2 → Sanchih → Shimen (at 26.3 km mark on Provincial Highway No. 2)
