With the spirit and attitude of "Sensei," each layer is meticulously stacked to create an incredibly soft, melt-in-your-mouth texture. These daily limited-edition mille-feuille cakes offer the simple beauty of Japanese minimalism!

This dessert shop on Minquan Road, which specializes in mille-feuille, has surprisingly short business hours. Even so, the place is packed in the afternoon, as foodies go out of their way to visit within the five-hour operating window to try the famous limited handmade mille-feuille. When asked why the hours are so limited, the owner explains that everything is made by hand, so production is truly limited and they close once they sell out. As for the shop name “Sensei,” the reason is even simpler: it’s located next to a traditional Chinese medicine clinic, so the name, which means “teacher” or “doctor” in Japanese (sensei), was chosen. It also reflects the artisan spirit of mastering one’s craft.

“Sensei” is another labor of love from the owner of Ice House. It also uses Marukyu Koyamaen from Kyoto, Japan, as a highlight. The handmade mille-feuille here doesn’t have a fixed menu—different flavors are offered daily—and there’s an even wider selection of drinks than at Ice House. On a leisurely afternoon, why not stop by Sensei, order a piece of mille-feuille with a drink, and enjoy the pure happiness brought by the flavors in a Japanese-inspired setting?

Sensei shares the same philosophy as Ice House: carefully selected ingredients, handmade production, low sugar and healthy options, all while letting you taste the true flavor of the ingredients. If you’re used to mille-feuille with distinct layers of pastry, you’ll be amazed here—how can mille-feuille be so smooth and soft? Silky and delicate, it melts in your mouth, with the rich flavors of the ingredients spreading through your palate. This small cake holds a world of flavor.

[Matcha Strawberry]

The presence of strawberries tells you it’s a winter seasonal flavor. Green matcha powder paired with bright red strawberries makes for a very pleasing color scheme. The middle layer is LESCURE fresh cream, which balances the bitterness of the matcha and highlights the tangy sweetness of the strawberries. It’s an unexpectedly perfect ingredient combination—who says matcha has to be paired only with red beans?

[Plain Matcha]

This plain matcha flavor best showcases the taste of Marukyu Koyamaen. Layer upon layer of matcha creates a rich and elegant flavor, with even the characteristic bitterness of matcha fully preserved. It’s perfect for matcha lovers who don’t prefer overly sweet treats, though those who are sensitive to bitterness may want to consider carefully before trying.

[Tieguanyin]

Made with Tieguanyin tea powder, this mille-feuille may look simple on the outside, but the flavor is truly surprising. The tea aroma is rich and lingering, standing out uniquely among the fruit-flavored options. Tea enthusiasts definitely shouldn’t miss this one—it’s a wonderful experience to enjoy the sensation of drinking tea while eating cake.

[Flower Fruit Mountain]

This one has a higher price point, but it’s no surprise when you see the generous fillings of fresh fruit. The soft, moist plain crust pairs with the tangy freshness of the fruit, creating a refreshing and not-too-sweet taste with a distinctly youthful vibe.

[Rich Chocolate]

A must-try for chocolate lovers, this bitter-sweet chocolate mille-feuille is made with 70% dark chocolate. It’s rich, smooth, and not overly sweet, making it very appealing. Apparently, it’s also one of the shop’s bestsellers.

[Colorful Berries]

At first glance, Colorful Berries looks like it’s just strawberries, but once you taste it, you’ll realize the filling is far more than that. Cranberries, raspberries… and other berries create a rich, multi-layered tangy-sweet flavor, perfectly balanced with the smooth and delicate fresh cream. Its pastel pink color is simply irresistible.

[Lemon Yogurt]

Perhaps because of the yogurt, this mille-feuille isn’t as sour as you might expect. The lemon aroma is a bit subtle, but it still has a gentle and mild taste.

[Drinks]

% Mixed Berry Milkshake

This berry milkshake is sure to win over many hearts. The tangy-sweet blend of strawberries, cranberries, raspberries, and blackcurrants is perfectly balanced. The various berries bring different layers of light sweetness—this is the natural fruit aroma, not artificially flavored. Drinking it is truly uplifting.

Marukyu Koyamaen Matcha Granita. This season’s matcha granita is topped with fresh strawberries, adding a pop of color to the otherwise monochromatic green. The strawberries sit on top without sinking, proving how thick and creamy the granita is. The rich matcha flavor, blended with fresh milk, becomes even more approachable.

% Strong Black Tea Latte

This bowl of Marukyu Koyamaen hot matcha latte is undoubtedly the shop’s signature drink—almost every table has one. A dollop of matcha powder is sprinkled on top of the velvety foam. Just lifting the bowl to drink, the aroma hits you before the first sip. The rich, mellow aftertaste is slightly bitter yet sweet, never astringent. The hand-whisked matcha seems to carry glimpses of Kyoto’s charm—how could you not get hooked?

% Artisanal Fruit Tart (description incomplete)

Another entrance shared with the %plus argon F Traditional Chinese Medicine Clinic, its decor is anything but careless.

%During several visits in ?? month, there were plenty of locally sourced ingredients used alongside artistic arrangements of flowers and plants adorning the walls, creating a unique ambiance. Just stepping in here allows you to enjoy a moment of relaxed indulgence.
