2017's Grand Finale Stargazing Event: The Geminid Meteor Shower with 100 Meteors per Hour

The Geminid Meteor Shower, one of the three major annual meteor showers, is always a highly anticipated event for stargazers. It occurs between December 4 and December 17 each year, and this year, according to measurements, the peak is expected to occur at 14:30 Taiwan Time on December 14, with up to 120 meteors visible per hour.

The Geminid Meteor Shower not only features a high number of meteors but also relatively slow speeds, making it one of the favorite targets for astronomy enthusiasts. The Meteorological Bureau’s Astronomy Station stated that although this year’s peak is estimated to occur during the daytime, the Geminid meteor shower has a longer distribution of peak activity periods. Therefore, during the observation window from the night of December 14 to 4:00 AM on December 15 before moonrise in Taiwan, in areas with wide visibility and minimal light pollution, there is still a good chance to see a significant number of meteors.
