Felt like I’d arrived in Japan！ An old warehouse transformed into the coolest new attraction

Another renovation of an old building gives rise to a new attraction. Taiwan’s first art gallery converted from a grain silo, the “Chishang Silo Art Gallery,” officially opened on December 9. Despite the cold weather, over 300 Chishang locals, dignitaries, and artists attended with the joyful spirit of “celebrating a happy occasion,” actively participating in this rare event. The architectural beauty of the silo art gallery also earned high praise from the locals, who were delighted to have an art gallery right in Chishang.

After two years in development, and under the planning of the Taiwan Good Foundation and curator Chu Hsiao-Chien, among others, the Chishang Silo Art Gallery was created by renovating a 50-year-old historic grain silo provided by the Chishang Duolimi Company. It is Taiwan’s first “Chishang Silo Art Gallery,” providing a space and platform for Chishang-based resident artists to showcase their works, engage with residents, and promote art education—helping shape Chishang into a community rich in cultural character.

The inaugural exhibition primarily featured works by nine resident artists invited by the “Chishang Art Village.” Additionally, the curatorial team presented the transformation process of the silo, interviews with local residents, and vintage photos of Chishang through multimedia displays. The smiles of the residents and the historical images of the space intersected, transforming the gallery into a place where local memories are revived.

In addition to the main exhibition, the opening of the Chishang Silo Art Gallery also collaborated with local shops to create the “Chishang Art Map.” Through various art events and exhibitions hosted by different venues, it showcased the local artistic energy of Chishang. These included an exhibition by local artist Peng Ming-Tong at “4.5 Kilometers Coffee,” the “Stroll Chishang” market, and workshops by “ISwell.”

In the future, the “Chishang Silo Art Gallery” will serve as a platform for artistic exchange and creative display, becoming an art space for everyone and bringing the local community’s vision of Chishang as a “town of culture and art” one step closer to reality.
