Whether you want to party at a concert, watch the sunrise, soak in hot springs, explore the city’s old streets, or enjoy the scenery of mountains and sea, Tainan has it all. To celebrate the arrival of 2018, Tainan is not only hosting the exciting “3-Part New Year’s Countdown” for a memorable experience, but also offers rich natural ecology, charming rural landscapes, and the latest Anping cruise experience. These fulfilling itineraries promise a great start to the year.

Whether you want to party at a concert, watch the sunrise, soak in hot springs, explore the city’s old streets, or enjoy the scenery of mountains and sea, Tainan has it all. To celebrate the arrival of 2018, Tainan is not only hosting the exciting “3-Part New Year’s Countdown” for a memorable experience, but also offers rich natural ecology, charming rural landscapes, and the latest Anping cruise experience. These fulfilling itineraries promise a great start to the year.

The “2017-18 Tainan New Year’s Trilogy” includes: Part one, bidding farewell to 2017 with the white sunset at the Wapian Salt Field in Jingzijiao, Beimen; Part two, an unlimited New Year’s Eve party at the square in front of Tainan High-Speed Rail Station that goes on all night; and Part three, welcoming the 2018 sunrise at Erliao in Zhenan. Erliao is not only the spot in Taiwan with the lowest altitude to view the sunrise over sea of clouds, but its lunar-like barren and undulating badland landscape is also awe-inspiring. Depending on the weather and time of day, it presents different landscapes like ink-wash paintings. After descending from Erliao, visitors can also join the “Tiger Head Pond New Year’s Day Flag-Raising and Hiking” nearby. Those who complete a lap around Tiger Head Pond can participate in a lucky draw on-site, with chances to win round-trip tickets to Osaka, among other prizes. Friends from all over are welcome to rise early and join in. Free admission is available before 10:00 AM that day, so greet the New Year with a healthy and energetic walk and create wonderful memories.

Winter is also the best season for soaking in hot springs. It’s recommended that travelers seeking tranquility visit the Guanziling Hot Spring Scenic Area. Here, you can quietly admire historical traces, stroll along the old hot spring street, and then relax in a hot spring inn to enjoy a “heartwarming” bath in muddy hot spring water, relieving fatigue and soaking in the romantic atmosphere of this century-old hot spring town. In addition, you can savor delicious dishes like clay pot chicken and local wild vegetables, and then head to the 175 Dongshan Coffee Avenue to taste the aromatic Dongshan coffee for a unique experience.

In Tainan, you can also explore the recent trend of revitalizing old buildings. The city is scattered with old houses of various styles and charm. The “Blueprint Cultural and Creative Park,” located right across from the Tainan Shin Kong Mitsukoshi Xinyi Store, was originally a complex of judicial dormitories. These old buildings have now been fully restored into a cultural and creative hub integrated into urban life, with a variety of creative shops turning it into a new cultural landmark of Tainan. Another popular trendy old street is Zhengxing Street, where hidden gems include creative cuisine, cafes, tea houses, ice cream shops, and container shops selling creative goods. It’s highly diverse and connects with the nearby Guohua Street food district to form an even more charming walking area. Take a stroll in Tainan during the New Year’s holiday and use the latest illustrated feature map brochure “Old Houses Time Machine,” compiled by the Tourism Bureau, to explore the stories and creative new faces of Tainan’s old houses.

If you want to enjoy the fun of getting close to nature, Tainan’s major scenic areas are some of the best choices for visitors. The “Deyuanpi Dutch Village,” which is open all day free of charge, features large wooden windmills from the Netherlands standing on its lawns, with a pair of big Dutch wooden shoes placed in front — the most distinctive landmarks. White fences stretch through the area, and the distant waters shimmer. The beautiful scenery makes the camping area in the park always in high demand. This natural, simple, and exotic pond-themed scenic area is perfect for families to take walks, ride bikes, camp, and have picnics.
