A café next to the City Art Museum where you can also enjoy a picnic on the lawn

Enjoy a quiet picnic on the lawn but don’t want to prepare the food yourself? Located next to the MOCA Taipei, Tropical Deli Cafe brings art into its indoor space and decor. With floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the green space of Taipei University of Education, the management team welcomes everyone to step outside and enjoy a picnic next to the city’s art museum. They’ve even prepared 10 picnic mats available for free rental.

A rare multi-concept café in Taipei that combines visual art and large-scale installation exhibitions, Tropical Deli Cafe adopts an indoor exhibition concept. It invited director Tsai Ming-liang to extend his creative work into the café, with art design by Lee Tien-Chueh planning and execution. With the help of multiple artists, remnants of woody plants from natural evolution are scattered throughout the café—branches, vines, tree trunks, wood planks, and concrete all come together to create a ruin-inspired aesthetic.

In addition to carefully selected coffee, tea, and desserts, one of the key features of Tropical Deli Cafe is its variety of open-faced sandwiches (Smørrebrød) available for takeout. Open-faced sandwiches (Smørrebrød) consist of a thick slice of rye or whole wheat bread paired with fresh ingredients such as lettuce, cheese, salmon, fruit, or meat. A layer of butter or cream is spread in between to preserve the freshness of the ingredients. These sandwiches are also perfect for a picnic outdoors.
