Getting lost in the winding alleys of Tainan is a moving experience. Just about a 10-minute walk from Tainan Railway Station, as you weave through lanes surrounded by old houses and traditional tiles, when you think you’ve started to lose your way, the sign for “Jiajia Xiaonantian” suddenly catches your eye. With its simple yet design-savvy decor, it’s as alluring as if it had drawn in the colors of the entire alley. However, some have described this as the most “male-disappointing” hotel in all of Tainan.

The most disappointing hotel for men? “This inn only accepts female guests staying alone, or females accompanied by males. ‘Male solo bookings are strictly not accepted!’” The hotel’s official booking website clearly states its check-in policy. In other words, if guys want to stay at this design hotel tucked away in the alleys, they’d better have a girlfriend or female friend to vouch for them – no solo stays allowed.

Also, “a lot of elderly uncles ride their scooters in, but once they get into the alley, their expressions turn shocked, and then they leave disappointed.” According to staff at Xiaonantian, aside from turning down male reservations or solo stays, the very existence of Jiajia Xiaonantian also “scares off” many longtime Tainan locals.

The site was originally a budget old hotel where many older male patrons would come every so often to enjoy a “cozy night” on their own. But after being transformed into Jiajia Xiaonantian, all traces of the old lodging disappeared – and that’s exactly why it’s now known as the “most disappointing hotel for men.”

Yet, while Jiajia Xiaonantian continues to disappoint men, it provides a safer and more independent space for many women traveling solo. Adorned with hand-painted depictions of the Seven Famous Flowers, the space exudes a happy, soft atmosphere. From the moment you check in, the hotel gives you a special gift just for female guests. The room design and sense of privacy also offer women a strong feeling of safety.

Following the minimalist design style of “Jiajia West Market Hotel,” Xiaonantian presents a simple yet vibrant image. Each room at Jiajia Xiaonantian is about 3.5 to 7 pyeong (approx. 11–23 sq m). To make the most of the compact space, the hotel uses foldable mattresses that serve as sofas when folded and transform into comfortable beds when opened. Each room also comes with a simple bathtub, as well as a vanity mirror and sink within the bedroom area.
