Mirage and micro techniques to discover Kaohsiung – Hotel anniversary celebrates with an art journey

Hotel operators in Kaohsiung have, for the first time in southern Taiwan, invited artists from various fields to reside in the hotel to stage an art exhibition and musical performance, blending the design hotel with art and music as part of their anniversary celebration. Additionally, they have planned a month-long birthday celebration with dining and room discount packages, as well as lucky draw activities to reward customers.

The Grand Formosa Regent Kaohsiung, formerly known as the Chinatrust Grand Hotel, will celebrate its anniversary in December. As the hotel closest to the Pier-2 Art Center, it has specially curated a series of cultural events to mark its anniversary and respond to the booming arts and cultural creativity scene in Kaohsiung. From now until February 28 next year, the “Liting – Contemporary Art Exhibition at Grand Formosa Regent Kaohsiung” will be held, featuring works by eight young Taiwanese artists who use diverse techniques such as three-dimensional installations, flat videos, and contemporary crafts through on-site installations, transforming the hotel’s public spaces into an urban art gallery.

The exhibition space spans from the basement level to the 7th floor of the hotel’s public areas, including walls, window glass, screens, lobbies, bars, or any small nook, turning the hotel’s communal spaces into an art exhibition venue. This three-month exhibition invites visitors to take a walking art journey in dialogue with the harbor city, starting from Yanchengpu MRT Station and arriving at the hotel.

In addition, on the evening of the 17th of this month, internationally renowned violinist Hu Nai-yuan will perform for the first time in a hotel in Kaohsiung. Dignitaries, community representatives, and over 200 VIP guests have been invited, along with students from Kaohsiung’s music programs, allowing classical music enthusiasts to enjoy an intellectual art journey on weekend evenings.

Grand Formosa Regent Kaohsiung stated that this exhibition is a brand-new conceptual plan, integrating site-specific artworks into the hotel to allow the public to engage with art and experience aesthetics. The exhibiting artists include Ding Changwen, Wang Zongxin, Jiang Chengyao, Lin Minghui, Kang Yachu, Wu Peishan, Duan Cunzhen, and Huang Jianhua. Among them, artist Ding Changwen, who grew up in Yancheng District, responds to the history of the Yancheng neighborhood with his work "Mirage." Wang Zongxin's "Micro City" uses micro digital techniques to connect well-known landmarks in Kaohsiung, while Jiang Chengyao’s "Rococo Plan II" offers a lavish vision of the industrial city of Kaohsiung with its dense motorcycle culture.

To encourage the public to visit the exhibition, the organizers have launched a lucky draw event with prizes including three Swiss Rado watches and five-day, four-night luxury suite stay certificates, with the total prize value exceeding NT$300,000. During the event period, visitors can get their Liting stamp cards stamped at six artwork display locations. With a completed Liting stamp card and basic personal information filled out, participants can join the lucky draw.

Aside from cultural and art events, Grand Formosa Regent Kaohsiung will also hold a one-year birthday celebration with room and dining discounts from December 1 to December 31. Anyone whose name contains the characters “Grand Formosa Regent Kaohsiung” can enjoy special offers for both dining and accommodation.
