An 80-year-old historic church transformed into a stunning and unique single-family mansion

The significance and beautiful architecture of churches often make them essential backdrops in movies, especially some world-famous cathedrals that have become familiar landmarks. Due to preconceived notions about churches, people often assume that only priests and other clergy live inside. However, an old-style church over 80 years old located in Kappelhof, the Netherlands, has been transformed by the design team Leijh into a beautiful single-family mansion!!

The Leijh team preserved the original exterior and internal structure of the church, so from the outside it still gives the illusion of being a church. Friends visiting might think they’re seeing things, right? It’s safe to say the homeowner who bought such a unique residence must be quite avant-garde and playful. Up!

Due to the large area covered by the church and its surroundings, when converted into a residence, the "courtyard" offers plenty of usable space—perfect for outdoor lounge chairs or reading on the grass without having to crowd into a park.

An open-plan bar-style kitchen was built along the original arched glass windows of the church, allowing you to enjoy the pleasant view outside while cooking. Next to it stands a staircase, which isn’t just a passage to the upper floor but also serves another special purpose.

The red staircase leads to a bedroom near the roof, and the top of the stairs can also function as a cozy reading nook. Upon closer inspection, you’ll notice the staircase’s unique design also acts as a wooden wall separating the living room from the kitchen. Such a multifunctional and practical design is truly worthy of endless praise.

Another corner was converted into a workspace and gathering area. The high ceiling was used to define zones and storage spaces, and even more uniquely, the designers installed an indoor swing, a charming touch that will keep kids from wanting to leave home.

The bright space enjoys excellent natural light without needing many lights.

The open-plan bedroom and bathroom are clearly divided by the color schemes of the painted walls. The calm black-toned bedroom aids sleep, while the white tones paired with the cleanliness of the shower area are just right.

Although owning such a single-family home with a garden in Taiwan might require heading to the suburbs or mountains, looking at these beautiful designs, some of the innovative ideas could also be applied elsewhere.
