A bus fell into a valley in Smangus, Jianshi Township, Hsinchu County today (the 9th), suspected to be caused by slippery roads due to rain. The bus first hit a mountain wall before losing control and plummeting into the ravine. At least 13 people have been confirmed dead. The news has shocked the nation and has led to renewed scrutiny of this route to the “Tribe of God,” which in fact harbors numerous hidden dangers. Located at an altitude of 1,600 meters in the mountains of Jianshi Township, Hsinchu County, Smangus is the most remote and isolated indigenous tribe in Taiwan. With its stunningly beautiful landscape, it is known as the “tribe lost by God on Earth.” Isolated from the outside world, the valley is often shrouded in mist, giving it the appearance of a heavenly realm. Coupled with its preservation of abundant natural resources and traditional indigenous architecture, it has become a popular tourist destination in recent years. The tribe also features several homestays for visitors to stay in.

Getting to Smangus requires traveling along an extremely tough and rugged mountain road. Driving from Jianshi Township to the tribe takes at least two to three hours. The path is winding and difficult, and unfamiliarity with the road, combined with poor weather and limited visibility, can easily lead to danger. Authorities currently believe the recent bus accident was caused by slippery roads due to rain. Travelers planning to visit this stunning “Tribe of God” in the future should remain vigilant and try to avoid traveling at night or during rainy weather to prevent accidents.
