Attention for Seoul Travelers Next Year: No Outside Beverages on Buses Starting January 1

Anyone who has been to Korea knows that eating and drinking are allowed on subways and buses, and there are even street food stalls inside subway stations. However, the Seoul government has announced that starting in 2018, outside beverages in cups will be banned on Seoul city buses. To ensure the safety of other passengers, drivers may refuse boarding to anyone carrying food or drinks in external packaging, depending on the situation.

Many people, in a rush, choose to take their street food or drinks to go, consuming them while waiting for the bus or subway. However, the Seoul government stated that bringing drinks onto buses could lead to spills due to sudden jolts, posing safety risks to other passengers. As a result, a new regulation has been established, prohibiting passengers and travelers from bringing outside drinks or food onto buses.

In addition, if a passenger is found carrying food or drinks on board, the bus driver may refuse to transport them if they determine that the items could compromise the safety of others. The new rule is set to take effect as early as January 19, 2018.
