The new year is just around the corner. Have you started planning your long holiday or trip yet? Booking.com, the global accommodation booking website, has compiled over 128 million guest reviews and conducted a survey of 19,000 people across 26 countries worldwide. It has released the “Top 8 Travel Trends for 2018” as a reference for all travel enthusiasts.

Trend 1: Can’t travel without 3C！ Travelers rely more on technology

The survey found that people are increasingly relying on technology when traveling. As many as 64% of travelers hope to use virtual reality preview features to “experience” a destination before making a booking decision.

Trend 2: Most want to check off their planned To-Do List

The survey revealed that 45% of respondents have already made a “bucket list” of must-visit destinations, with 85% hoping to achieve at least one of them in 2018.

Trend 3: Millennials crave revisiting old places to relive childhood memories

Among respondents aged 18–34, 44% plan to revisit their favorite family travel destinations in 2018. Additionally, 34% of travelers hope to return to places they loved as children and explore them in new ways.

Trend 4: Where movies are filmed, travelers want to go

When planning travel destinations, trending internet topics or newly released TV shows and movies have become inspiration sources for many respondents. Among them, 36% are eager to visit filming locations of movies or TV dramas, with the most popular being the scenery from “Game of Thrones” (29%) filmed in Croatia, Spain, and Iceland.

Trend 5: Health and wellness travel is more popular than indulgent spending

59% of travelers believe that experiencing a different way of life through travel is far more important than material enjoyment. More than half of the respondents (55%) also pointed out that travel allows them to reflect on their lives and try to adopt a better lifestyle upon returning.

Trend 6: Spending more is okay, but value for money is key

The survey found that 48% of travelers decide whether to visit a destination based on the local economic conditions, while 47% specifically cited “exchange rates” as one of their key considerations when planning annual travel.

Trend 7: Traveling with friends is more fun

Compared to last year’s survey results, the number of travelers hoping to go on trips with friends increased from 21% to 25% within a year. Respondents believe that traveling with friends provides more opportunities for communication and helps relieve the pressures of a busy life.

Trend 8: Enjoy an undisturbed trip！ Travelers look forward to more private space

Data shows that compared to staying in hotels, 33% of travelers prefer to stay in vacation rentals or independent holiday homes to enjoy a more private and undisturbed travel experience.
