The 2017 Taichung International Flower Carpet Festival introduced VR technology for the first time. Visitors can click on the VR banner on the festival’s official website to experience the charm of the flower sea even without being there in person. The Taichung City Government Tourism Bureau noted that when paired with 3D glasses, it feels as if you are stepping right into the 4-hectare sea of flowers, experiencing the vibrant allure of the giant music garden.
The Tourism Bureau stated that this year’s Flower Carpet Festival incorporates the GNP concept of the flower expo by rehabilitating the soil of a former landfill, planting flowers directly in the soil. Over ten types of flowers have grown and thrived across 2 hectares of land, bringing a positive cycle of nature, ecology, and symbiosis to the site. The city government has innovated with aerial VR footage paired with a dedicated webpage, allowing users to zoom in and out through 720-degree VR views to select the best viewing angle. With 3D glasses, it’s like being right at the Flower Carpet Festival.
Chen Sheng-shan, Director of the Tourism and Travel Bureau, pointed out that in addition to using virtual reality technology to overlook the flower carpets from above, visitors can also interact up close with the flower expo mascots—the Formosan clouded leopard family—and the Omama flower carpets, as well as interactive installations. This brings the flower carpets into a whole new “visual realm,” allowing you to listen to the “sound of blooming flowers” as if you were really there.
Chen emphasized that in addition to the aerial footage of the Flower Carpet Festival, the city government has invited the Mu Feng Creative Dance Troupe to perform passionately. Paired with the swaying flowers of the festival, they dance with highly dynamic movements, creating a fresh combination of technology and tourism. The city government has also provided three small-vehicle free parking lots where visitors can transfer to free shuttle buses to reach the exhibition area.
