Take a relaxing trip to Dulan Bi, the most beautiful "corner" of eastern Taiwan!

Here you’ll find a stone engraved with the word “AMIS,” revealing that this is a sacred ancestral site of the Amis people. Legend has it that the Amis have lived here for 3,500 years, but a devastating earthquake triggered a tsunami that wiped them out—except for a brother and sister who survived on a bamboo raft, drifting to the South Pacific islands carried by the Kuroshio Current. Generations later, their descendants returned to Dulan Bi to settle and repopulate.

This place was also used by elders to predict the weather and serves as an important ceremonial ground for the Dulan tribe’s fishing season and sea rituals. Around July each year, before sunrise, tribal elders led by the chief come to Dulan Bi to worship the ancestral spirits, kicking off a series of rituals and training activities. It can be said that this is the cultural root of the Dulan Amis.

Occasionally, cows are brought here to graze. Take a closer look and you’ll see a pillar standing in the middle—it holds another piece of the land’s history. After the Japanese colonial period, much of Dulan Bi’s land was nationalized, and local residents have been fighting for the return of their traditional territory. In 2003, when the government first proposed a development project at Dulan Bi, a playwright named Chen Mingcai, who deeply loved the Dulan tribe, protested the project by jumping into the sea. Only after this incident was the development halted. To honor this hero who sacrificed himself to protect the land, a driftwood pole was erected on the Dulan Bi shore as a memorial.

There is a significant height difference between the cliffs and the sea. Visitors going to enjoy the ocean view or watch the sunrise should be cautious and avoid getting too close to prevent accidents. As this is a sacred site for the Amis people, please remain respectful, stay quiet, and do not leave any trash. Let’s all help protect this sacred and hidden gem.
