It’s not uncommon for foreign travelers in Taiwan to have their phones or wallets lost and then found. This not only earns praise for the kindness of Taiwanese people but also highlights Taiwan as a place where people do not take lost items and has a high standard of civic behavior. But it’s not just Taiwan— a Taiwanese traveler surnamed Lin lost his wallet two months ago in Hong Kong. Recently, he received a notification from Mong Kok Police Station, relayed through the Commonwealth Bank, informing him that his wallet had been found. Since the wallet still contained valuables, he was asked to personally come and claim it. The traveler happily praised Hong Kong as a place full of human warmth, giving it a hundred likes and expressing deep gratitude.
The traveler said that he had gone to Macau with his cousin for gambling during 228 this year and on the way back, made a detour to Hong Kong for some shopping. However, he accidentally dropped his wallet, which contained a total of over NT$8,000 in Hong Kong dollars and New Taiwan dollars, as well as credit and debit cards. “After two months, I had long given up hope and was even quite upset about it for a while.”

Just when Mr. Lin had almost forgotten about the incident, the Commonwealth Bank, where his salary was deposited, suddenly called him on May 7th, saying that the bank had received a letter from Mong Kok Police Station. Someone had found his wallet, and the Hong Kong police were trying to locate him.
According to accounts, the Hong Kong Police Force sought help from the Commonwealth Bank because Mr. Lin’s wallet contained a Commonwealth Bank debit card. The police thus sent a letter asking the bank to help find the owner. However, when the bank checked its computer records, they found that the phone number he had left was incorrect, causing them to spend a week searching before finally locating his employer and reaching him.
The Hong Kong police first tried to find the owner of the wallet through diplomatic channels but were unsuccessful. They then contacted Mr. Lin through the Commonwealth Bank. In total, it took nearly two months of back-and-forth correspondence via official documents.
Mr. Lin also revealed, “When the manager from the Commonwealth Bank came to find me, she also spoke highly of the Hong Kong Police Force. That female manager said they had learned something too, because a dedicated attitude really matters.”
Mr. Lin happily stated that Mong Kok Police Station said the wallet still contained valuables and needed him to come in person to collect it. To be cautious, he asked a friend in Hong Kong to call and inquire. The police station replied, “We’re waiting for you to come get it!” He sincerely gave a thumbs up to the Hong Kong Police Force.
The Taiwanese traveler shared his joy of recovering the lost wallet on Facebook. He described, “Jack, this is truly amazing. I’m so happy that the lost money was found... And, of course, the persistent spirit
