For 60 years without fail — the world’s most senior flight attendant is 81 years young

Most people’s impression of flight attendants is typically that of young women, but in the United States, there is one flight attendant who has spent six decades in the skies — and at the age of 81, she still carries out her duties with radiant energy, showing undiminished passion for her work to this day.

This flight attendant is Betty Nash, who works for American Airlines. With over 60 years of flying under her belt, she has witnessed the golden era of aviation history at its very best. When Betty first took a plane ride at the age of 16, she was captivated by the romance and charm of flying, so as a young girl, she decided she wanted to become a flight attendant.

On November 4, 1957, Betty began her career as a flight attendant. Sixty years later, she is still doing the job she fell in love with as a youngster, serving diligently every day. Betty may be the most senior flight attendant in the world. Reflecting on her very first flight mission 60 years ago, her face still lights up with unmistakable excitement. Back then, a one-way ticket cost just $12, all flight schedules were written on blackboards, and there were no in-flight entertainment systems. The only ways passengers could pass the time were reading newspapers or playing card and board games.

But her enthusiasm for service has not faded with time. Nowadays, Betty still arrives at Ronald Reagan National Airport before sunrise. She typically operates the Washington to Boston and back route. Thanks to her unmatched experience and consistently graceful demeanor, many passengers specifically choose to fly this route just to witness and enjoy Betty’s service firsthand.

This November, American Airlines CEO Doug Parker presented Betty with an award in recognition of her 60 years of dedicated service. In addition to her flying duties, Betty is also actively involved in charity work. Who says time has to make you old? Though her face shows the marks of the years, Betty remains devoted and passionate about her work, making it hard to believe she has gone from her youthful prime to having silver hair. And now, she continues to soar with vitality. Betty says, “Technology can’t replace flight attendants, because nothing beats the warmth of human interaction.” She is also confident that she will continue to work as a flight attendant for years to come.
