On the pitch-black sea, a torch is suddenly lit, prompting tens of thousands of greenback fish to leap wildly out of the water. The fishing boat then scoops up the catch with a dip net, creating a dazzling fireworks-like scene. This ancient fishing method is called "Fire-Jumping Fishing" (蹦火仔), and today, only four fishing boats in Huanggang still use this technique. To promote fishing village tourism, New Taipei City has invited the public to join the "Jinshan Fire-Jumping Fishing" performance event on May 25 and 26 at Huanggang in Jinshan.

Liao Rongqing, Director of the Agriculture Bureau of New Taipei City Government, explained that starting every May, schools of greenback fish swarm the northern coastal waters, marking the busiest season for "Fire-Jumping Fishing" boats. By mixing "sulfur stones" with water to produce acetylene and igniting it, the intense burst of light attracts the fish to gather and jump. The fishermen then use dip nets to haul in the catch. The method is called "Fire-Jumping Fishing" because of the loud popping sound made when the torch is ignited.

Liao pointed out that the "Jinshan Fire-Jumping Fishing" activity continues throughout the summer, and from the shore, one can see the flickering lights of the fishing boats. However, this ancient fishing technique is now only practiced by four fishing boats in Huanggang across the nation.

Last summer, the New Taipei City Government organized six "Fire-Jumping Fishing" performances, which were well received. To allow more people to experience this traditional fishing village method up close, this year (2013), in collaboration with the Fisheries Agency under the Council of Agriculture, Executive Yuan, and in conjunction with the Fugui Fishery Port Direct Sales Center, the city is hosting four "Jinshan Fire-Jumping Fishing 'Fishing Fun Nights'" events. These will take place around the greenback fish migration season on May 25 and 26 at Huanggang Fishery Port, and on June 1 and 2 at Fugui Fishery Port. Activities include performances of the Fire-Jumping Fishing method, Jinshan Fire-Jumping Fishing-themed dance, waterfront movies, and greenback fish tastings.
