Away from the hustle and bustle of the city, many people choose to vacation in the South Pacific island nation to enjoy the leisurely feeling of being embraced by the blue sky and sea. Speaking about tourism in the Fiji region, Wang Wenlong, Head of Trade and Tourism at the Fiji Trade and Tourism Office in China, said that the local culture blends indigenous Polynesian traditions, Indian immigrant influences, British colonial heritage, and Western leisure styles, presenting a diverse and vibrant local flavor. The natural ecology, including coral reefs, tropical rainforests, and seafood, is also highly distinctive. Overall, it is a pristine and beautiful travel paradise.
Fiji consists of the main island and many smaller islands, offering a wide variety of activities. For backpackers, an “island-hopping” approach offers a more casual way to explore. After purchasing ferry tickets at a hotel on the main island, you can visit a series of islands off the northwest coast of the main island, and you don’t necessarily have to follow the standard itineraries provided by hotels—you can choose different boats to reach the islands you want to visit.
Ni Peien, Secretary at the Fiji Trade and Tourism Office in China, also noted that each island has its own unique theme and features. For example, the Yasawa Islands are known for their blue coral, while Vomo Island—beloved by Madonna—offers activities such as snorkeling and swimming. Some islands focus on eco-friendliness, using almost exclusively locally sourced materials, while others cater specifically to night owls, offering bars and campfire parties. Essentially, each island has its own distinct appeal. Backpackers are advised to customize their itineraries based on their preferred islands, and travelers less familiar with the area can ask hotel operators for recommended islands or opt for package tours.
In addition to backpacker routes, there are also attractions suitable for family trips. Ni Peien, who is very familiar with travel in Fiji, said that there are many resort hotels along the southern coast of the main island. These not only provide accommodation but also feature a whole stretch of coral reefs and water activities nearby. Importantly, the hospitals and resources on the main island are relatively convenient, making it more suitable for families traveling with children. Some hotels even offer daycare services to help take care of kids.

The typical recommended duration for a trip to Fiji is around 8 days. There are mainly two types of flights to Fiji: one departs from Hong Kong on Fiji Airways, with prices ranging from 30,000 to 40,000 (including taxes), and the other departs from Seoul, South Korea, on Korean Air, with prices around 40,000 (including taxes). However, due to flight schedules, the return trip requires an overnight stay in South Korea. Ni Peien suggests arranging a two-day, one-night itinerary in South Korea to make good use of the layover time. Additionally, during the summer vacation period, flights on Korean Air may increase by 10–20%, so it’s advisable to book early or avoid peak travel seasons.
Before traveling to Fiji, it’s best to do some online research to understand what items to prepare. Ni Peien pointed out that it’s important to check the contact information for the Taiwanese Representative Office in Fiji in case of emergencies. It’s also recommended to bring an eight-shaped power adapter. Avoid bringing too many valuables or snacks, as items without English labels may be confiscated or destroyed.
