This popular seaside spot in Tainan features a seasonal, limited-time landscape of lush green algae that typically appears around April each year. The seaweed-covered wave-dissipating blocks by the shore, paired with the glow of the setting sun, create a truly dreamy scene.

Tainan’s Golden Coast is a highly recommended sunset spot among locals. Many out-of-town visitors come to Tainan and make a stop here to play in the sand, take a stroll, and enjoy the serene seascape. Unless a local mentions it, you might not even know that this place also boasts a seasonal green algae spectacle. To catch a glimpse of the beautiful “seaweed carpet,” a bit of luck is needed—not only must the timing be right, but you also have to catch the tide at the perfect moment to witness the magical green algae landscape of the Golden Coast.

During low tide, the shoreline of the Golden Coast reveals numerous rocks covered in lovely patches of green—it’s actually green algae clinging to the stones, bearing quite a resemblance to New Taipei City’s Old Meishi Green Stone Trough. The green algae of the Golden Coast has gained some fame in photography circles, with many enthusiasts checking tide schedules in advance to secure the best spots just to capture the perfect shot of the algae, sea, and sunset.

Taiwanese photographer Hong Nianhong shared on Facebook a photo he took on April 30th in front of the Golden Coast Visitor Center, showcasing the “seaweed carpet.” He noted that while the current amount of algae is relatively sparse, the best viewing period is actually during the first dry tide of April each year, when the “carpet” is at its fullest—a truly worthwhile sight.
