I remember often reading in books and blogs how people praisedKaruizawa's autumn colors. This autumn, I finally had the chance to make my dream come true.Karuizawais locatedin NaganoPrefecture on the foothills of Mount Asama, at an altitude of about 1,000 meters, and is the second fastest place inJapan's northern regions to see autumn leaves. Due to its vast area and the lush growth of larch trees,Karuizawaenjoys an exceptionally long maple-viewing season of one and a half months (from October to mid-November). If you miss the autumn foliage inTokyo, consider heading there to chase the "maple" hues.

Must-see Spot 1: The Old Mikkasan Guesthouse

The Old Mikkasan Guesthousewas built in 1905 and embodies the essence ofJapaneseMeiji-era architecture. It was officially designated as an Important Cultural Property ofJapanin 1980. Surrounding the guesthouse are numerous maple trees, and in autumn, the red leaves beautifully complement the maroon exterior walls of the building.
