When it comes to churches,Helsinki’s most famous is undoubtedly theHelsinkiCathedral next to the University. With its white color scheme and Russian architectural style, the cathedral exudes the solemnity typical of Eastern European churches. Surprisingly, the square in front of the cathedral isn’t as crowded as one might imagine, making it a perfect spot for photography enthusiasts to capture the building from any angle until they’re satisfied.

Another must-visit church inHelsinkiis the Uspenski Cathedral, located near the main cathedral. In contrast to the Helsinki Cathedral, Uspenski offers a completely different vibe. Designed in the Byzantine style with a dark red exterior, it has the appearance of an ancient castle. As the church is built on a small hill, visitors need to walk up a steep path to reach it—but it’s well worth the effort to witness its charm. By the way, there’s also a Lover’s Bridge beneath the church where couples can go to attach a love lock.

As for the most unique of the bunch, it’s actually not either of the two traditional churches mentioned above, but rather a rather unassuming small church—the Rock Church. From the outside, this church looks like a large bunker, and for good reason—it was indeed built inside a massive rock. Once inside, however, you enter an entirely different world. At first glance, the interior resembles a classical concert hall, featuring a glass roof that allows natural light to flood in. Sitting inside, with sunlight streaming from above and the excellent acoustics of the rock walls enhancing the sound, the organ music resonates in a way that’s truly solemn and serene—you simply have to experience it in person. Perhaps because the rock walls offer such exceptional sound reflection, it’s said thatHelsinkiresidents often hold concerts here.
