The scorching summer vacation is just around the corner, and ice cream has become the go-to treat for beating the heat and lifting spirits. Surprisingly, Su Li-wen, usually a formidable presence on the taekwondo mat, made an appearance as a one-day store manager at an ice cream café, donning staff uniform to serve customers. IOU Café, a brand-new ice cream restaurant under the Mei Er Mei Food Group, is set to open in Yongkang Street, going head-to-head with several local mango shaved ice shops, marking the start of an ice cream showdown.

IOU Café introduces flavors from around the world: Classic Japanese yogurt, distinct from traditional soft-serve machines, offers a soft-serve ice cream with a smooth, delicate texture and a subtly tangy taste that preserves its natural flavor; Italian sorbet, carefully selected from Taiwan’s seasonal fruits, has a granita-like fine texture, with generous amounts of fresh fruit puree added regardless of cost to maintain the freshness of the fruit; classic French ice cream is made with premium ingredients imported from Europe and crafted by hand using traditional French patisserie techniques, resulting in a rich, dense, and exquisitely flavorful dessert.

In addition to 12 classic flavors, the opening press conference on June 29 also invited Taiwan’s pride and former national taekwondo athlete Su Li-wen to serve as a one-day store manager. Su Li-wen, usually clad in her martial arts uniform and exuding authority, swapped into an IOU Café uniform to handcraft ice cream herself. Su Li-wen shared, “This is a rare experience for me, as I need to control my diet due to sports, and standing behind the counter to take orders and prepare food is something I’ve never done before.”

Su Li-wen mentioned that ice cream is the most refreshing treat in summer, yet many people still can’t enjoy delicious ice cream. She hopes this event will gather abundant love and contribute to helping underprivileged children, youths, women, and their families who are facing hardships. The business has partnered with the Lien Foundation to donate the proceeds from 300 desserts sold that day to the foundation, supporting counseling services for vulnerable women and unwed mothers, helping them move past their struggles and embrace a brighter future. Lien also calls for more businesses to join the effort of care, allowing those in need to feel the warmth and love from society.
