【Massive Sea of Clouds? A Must-Visit for Photography Enthusiasts – Japan’s Hyōgo Prefecture “Castle in the Sky” Seki-jo

Previously, Twitter was flooded with images of a mountain castle appearing and disappearing in the clouds, resembling a “castle in the sky”! This place, renowned as Japan’sJapan“Machu Picchu,” is Seki-jo Castle, situated inJapanHyōgo Prefecture, and is one ofJapan ’s 100 Famous Castles, just a 3-hour drive from Kansai International Airport in Osaka.

To see this floating fortress, you first need to consider the season when sea of clouds appear. From September to December, if it rains the night before and the next day is clear, you have a good chance of witnessing the spectacle. However, if you want to catch both the sea of clouds and autumn foliage — since the local maple leaf viewing season is from mid-November to early December — then the best time is from mid-November to December. Around March, you might also get to see cherry blossoms.

To capture such breathtaking views, timing and vantage points are crucial. Visitors can head to “Tachigumo-kyo,” a small hill facing the mountain castle, to enjoy a distant view of Seki-jo. As there are no buildings or trees on the castle ruins, you can see the layers of stone walls rising above the sea of clouds, creating the illusion of a “castle in the sky.” But note that after reaching the parking lot at the base, you still have a 25–30 minute hike. Some visitors start ascending as early as 4:30 a.m., so make sure to allow plenty of time.
