A Visual Feast: Mika Ninagawa × Jellyfish at Sumida Aquarium in Tokyo Makes a Dreamy Debut

The name Mika Ninagawa is likely familiar to many Hong Kongers who follow Japanese culture. This photographer and film director has recently collaborated again with the jellyfish exhibit at Sumida Aquarium in Tokyo, blending her vibrant and colorful artistic style with the ethereal beauty of underwater jellyfish. From the moment you step into the exhibition hall, visitors feel as though they’ve entered a kaleidoscope, admiring the graceful movements of jellyfish under mesmerizing lights.

The venue’s 18 jellyfish tanks are all set against backdrops of imagery and photo displays supervised and produced by Mika Ninagawa. Upon entering, two massive jellyfish display tanks welcome you, alongside eight U-shaped tanks showcasing various species of jellyfish. Watching the tiny jellyfish swim as if in a palette of colors sweeps your eyes into a world of blossoms—delighting both adults and children alike.

Another must-see highlight is the jellyfish kaleidoscope tunnel, made with approximately 5,000 mirrors. Walking along the roughly 50-meter slope, you’ll find eight tanks on either side, all reflecting Mika Ninagawa’s photographic works. With the light and images mirrored and projected all around, you feel as though you’re inside a kaleidoscope, momentarily surrounded by countless blossoms, enhanced by a delicate fragrance—it's super dreamy.

And don’t rush to leave while in the tunnel, because there’s also a video artwork playing for about seven minutes. Watching jellyfish intermingle with randomized backgrounds creates a highly soothing experience. The best part? It’s available in two versions—morning and evening—so you can watch it again depending on the time slot.
