Late-Night Eats Behind Taoyuan’s Grand Temple: Affordable Pork and Tofu Rice with Plenty of Side Dishes

Around Zhongzheng Road near Taoyuan’s Grand Temple, there are many local eats. Usually, I go to Yonghe Market in the morning to shop for groceries, so I rarely visit during dinner or late-night hours. However, I often stop by to buy bread. The pork and tofu rice place behind the temple does a brisk business, so I instinctively chose it for dinner. Plus, it’s open until the early hours, making it a true late-night eatery on Zhongzheng Road in Taoyuan—perfect even for a midnight snack.

The eye-catching sign makes it hard for passersby to miss, especially on cold winter days when the temperature drops—you just want a steaming bowl of soup.

Seeing this food truck with all the ingredients on display, you can tell there’s plenty to go around. Just looking at the truck makes you feel like the food is abundant and tempts you to step in for a meal.

The best part? They even offer delivery service—orders over NT$300 within the vicinity qualify, though it’s best to confirm the exact delivery range with the shop. There are so many choices on the menu, but I think the side dishes are the real highlight. I wanted to order almost every single one~

The staff served the food lightning-fast, and in no time, our table was covered. No joke—this was just our late-night order. If it were dinner time, we’d have ordered even more. Even though we’d already had dinner, we still ordered a full table. We really know how to eat…

Chicken Rice – NT$50 (Small)

I didn’t expect the chicken rice to come with shredded bamboo shoots, which just happens to be Anita’s favorite. What surprised me more was that even though she’d already had dinner, she polished off a whole bowl of chicken rice. There were plenty of shredded chicken pieces on top, drizzled with some braising sauce—it smelled amazing just from the aroma.

Signature Tofu and Pork Rice – NT$50 (Small)

The signature tofu and pork rice is the shop’s star dish. The pork pieces are cut larger, so you can really taste the texture of the meat. It has a savory, salty flavor that’s smooth and easy to enjoy.

Special Braised Pork – NT$60

I spotted this as a featured side dish on the shop’s signboard, so I had to try it. The skin is fried to a perfect crisp, and when dipped in sweet chili sauce, it’s an absolute match made in heaven. I think the sweet chili sauce really elevates it. The pork isn’t dry at all—the more you chew, the more flavorful it gets. No wonder it’s a signature side dish.

Braised Fried Tofu – NT$30

Among braised side dishes, this is one I don’t usually go for because I feel the middle part lacks flavor. But braised fried tofu happens to be a regular order for Mr. A, and even Vincent loves it, saying the tofu is soft and tender.

Bitter Melon and Ribs Soup – NT$40

The bitter melon is cut into large chunks, preserving its original texture, and it’s stewed until well-flavored—soft enough to melt in your mouth. The broth is clear and slightly sweet, and the bitter melon isn’t bitter at all.

Taro and Ribs Crispy Soup – NT$50

I was originally torn between the mushroom and chicken feet soup and the taro and ribs crispy soup, but I ultimately went with my favorite—taro. The taro is first deep-fried and then steamed until soft, resulting in a tender and delicious texture. The crispy ribs aren’t greasy either, and the broth is refreshing, warming you right up...

Blanched Rice Blood Cake – NT$40

Rice blood cake is a unique Taiwanese street food, rarely seen in other countries. I enjoy it steamed, boiled, or fried—any way really. At this shop, the rice blood cake on its own doesn’t have much flavor, so it relies on sweet chili sauce to enhance the taste. Still, it’s a light and refreshing dish.

Looking at the food being kept warm on the counter, it all looked so delicious—I probably should’ve ordered more...

Even an occasional late-night food outing can lead to discovering lots of affordable eats. The tofu and pork rice place is open from dinner time, located right behind Taoyuan’s Grand Temple, and there are plenty of parking spaces nearby.
