Starbucks has always been a flagship of American corporate culture, so isn’t it somewhat jarring to see one in the classic,KyotoUji?

This Starbucks, which opened in March 2017, is calledKyotoUji Byodoin Omotesando Store. The location was formerly home to a long-standing café. The branch sits along the same road as the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Byodoin Phoenix Hall,” making it a great spot to enjoy a drink after visiting the historic temple.

Retaining the architectural style of a traditional Japanese teahouse, the “Byodoin” Starbucks also features beautiful pine trees that serve as a striking landmark outside.

Like other local buildings, it uses a simple wooden design and includes benches facing the back garden, allowing guests to sip their drinks in a nature-filled environment.

With floor-to-ceiling windows that open up to the Japanese garden outside, the café perfectly blends modern and traditional elements. Who would have thought Starbucks could have such a unique charm? When you’reKyotoUji and need a break, this is the place to rest.
