Taipei is a bustling metropolis filled with people coming and going, yet few notice that the city also has a centuries-old charm. Amid the dense commercial buildings of Neihu, you can experience rural life, while the historic irrigation fields of Shilin District are overshadowed by its lively night markets. The urban-rural contrast in Taipei is like stepping into a Doraemon time tunnel. With summer vacation in full swing, bring your family and kids on a journey through Taipei’s past and present.

Organized by the Taipei City Animal Protection Office, two events will be held on August 2 and 17. The Chihsing Agricultural Development Foundation will host the “Rural Ecology and Lifestyle Experience Camp” at the Chihsing Ecological Garden, and the Chihsing Countryside Culture Foundation will hold the “Shilin Pingdingshan Ancient Irrigation Fields Eco-Tour” in Shilin District’s Pingdingshan area. These activities offer a journey through Taipei’s ecological timeline.

These two events will take participants back in time to experience the charm of century-old irrigation channels and learn about the challenges of early agricultural development, including the hard work of digging irrigation canals. They’ll get a real feel for the resilient lives of farming families, or immerse themselves as part of the local aquatic ecosystem. Enjoy the sweetness of harvesting crops, and take part in fun, eco-friendly activities like grasshopper weaving and bamboo water guns. These experiences blend multiple generations of both adults and children into the rural atmosphere of “production,” “life,” and “ecology.”
