New independent bookstore "或者" opens in Zhubei Hakka Cultural Preservation Area

Reading helps with thinking and is a way to calm the mind. To provide residents of Hsinchu County and City with more diverse cultural spaces, Hongmei Cultural and Creative Industries Co., Ltd. has established the "或者 Bookstore," which officially opened on May 13 in the Xinzhuangwu Hakka Cultural Preservation Area in Zhubei City. It is expected that by hosting a variety of events, the bookstore will attract young people to the Xinzhuangwu Hakka Cultural Preservation Area, where interactions among people can spark creativity and invigorate and deepen local culture.

Chen Tien-Shun, chairman of Hongmei Cultural and Creative, said: “The bookstore has around 7,000 books in its collection, with the goal of providing readers with the most worthwhile reads and creating a parent-child reading environment. The aim is for the bookstore to become one of the next generation’s memories of their hometown, or even the starting point of their dreams.” In addition, the second floor of the store offers light meals made with safe, small-farm produce; and it will also host art and cultural performances, various courses, and club meetups on an irregular basis.

Starting with the bookstore as the foundation for spatial development, "或者" is not just a bookstore. The combination of vision, aesthetics, and functionality in the "或者" space reflects a sincere approach to curating an "environment"—a new form of interactive space for people and culture. It aspires to become an essential cultural venue for the residents of Zhubei, integrating artistic, culinary, agricultural, and symbiotic elements. The goal is to promote diverse reading and thinking, strengthen parent-child relationships, and bridge the gap between people, society, and the land.
